Metrofitting expands the idea of retrofitting and takes it to an urban scale, recognizing the environmental challenges our cities increasingly face. The practice of metrofitting embraces a diverse range of methods, requiring new knowledge, new practices and changes in the education of a number of professions, including architecture, planning, engineering, and policy-making.
This dynamic presentation will explore ‘risk mapping’ and the critical relationships between the material fabric and infrastructure of the city, urban food production and the future, and workplace transformation – linking back to the scale of the challenges cities face and how education practices can change to meet these challenges. It will highlight possibilities for Cincinnati as we see how metrofitting, created in the river city of Brisbane Australia, can be adapted and developed to meet the local conditions and risks associated with the river city of Cincinnati.
The presentation will aim to deliver four learning outcomes: a clear understanding of the concept of metrofitting and associated practices, ‘relational thinking’ as a means to advance the capabilities of design practices, the difference between ‘sustainability’ and ‘the ability-to-sustain’, and the ability to develop professional practices appropriate to the emergent era of climate change.
Doors open at 5:30 for networking, registration, and hors d’oeuvres. The presentation will start at 6 pm, followed by the panel discussion at 7 pm.
This presentation has been preapproved for 1 CEUs from GBCI and 1 CE from AIA.
